It is unlikely that Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers climbed to third place in the 2021 NFL Draft to select Trey Lance or Justin Fields if past behavior predicts future behavior, as research in social psychology suggests.
Shanahans fears mobile defenders
Kyle Shanahan was the offensive coordinator when the Washington Redskins recruited Robert Griffin III with second overall choice in the 2012 NFL Draft and Kirk Cousins early in the fourth round of the same draft, leaving many scratching their heads because the team would select a defender soon after sketching what many believed to be the quarterback in RGIII.
Later, it was learned that Mike Shanahan resented and was ready to give up because of Dan Snyder’s preferential treatment of RGIII and the warm support of Kirk Cousins, and Mike Shanahan explicitly expressed anxiety about the potential injury to the quarterback RGIII when calling Kirk Cousins from theft that he couldn’t get through. In his senior season, RGIII ran for 699 yards and 10 run touchdowns.
Kyle Shanahan was the head coach when the San Francisco 49ers overtook Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson to select Solomon Thomas and later select a quarterback in the third round. In his junior season at Texas Tech, Mahomes had 285 running yards and 12 running touchdowns; Deshaun Watson had 629 running yards and 9 touchdowns in his last season at Clemson.
Shanahans look for defenders who don’t run
Kirk Cousins ran for -39 yards and zero touchdowns in his senior season and CJ Beathard ran for -13 yards and two touchdowns in his senior season. In the previous year, he was traded for the 49ers, Jimmy Garoppolo had 6 running yards and zero touchdowns and the story showed Kyle Shanahan choosing quarterbacks with nonexistent racing games.
Justin Fields and Trey Lance have games running
Justin Fields ran for 484 yards and 10 run touchdowns in his second season and 383 yards and 5 run touchdowns in 6 games less in his junior season. Trey Lance ran for 1100 yards and 14 touchdowns in his second season.
Will history repeat itself?
It is a foregone conclusion that San Francisco has risen to three to take a quarterback and if this is the case, Kyle Shanahan will once again go to a quarterback that does not feature a racing game and is a more traditional pocket passer the mold of Kirk Cousins Or CJ Beathard?
Niners moving to 3 = QB

Some, including Shanahan’s friend Chris Simms, mentioned Mac Jones as a possibility for the Niners. Mac Jones had 14 yards in a touchdown in his junior season.
49ers-Dolphins … Kyle Shanahan trying to control his own destiny. You exchange up to 3 for a QB that is ready for the NFL now, not a project. And for me that says Mac Jones.
– Chris Simms (@CSimmsQB) March 26, 2021
I would echo @CSimmsQB and @MikeSilver that Mac Jones, like Trey Lance, is suitable for Kyle Shanahan’s attack. The issue with Jones concerns the high / value of rising.

History does not have to repeat itself
They say that doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome is the definition of insanity and humans can change their minds, but does Shanahan have the flexibility and stamina to break the mold and choose a mobile quarterback for the first time? Some think so.
Mac Jones would not be a shock. My thought, however, is that they would like to have more playing skills on the legs of their next QB. https://t.co/7l4XvCmF4B

Niners fans, who are thirsty for a dynamic ace as a defender, are praying that history will not repeat itself and that the idea of Shanahan not taking Trey Lance or Justin Fields is a cold take, that does not age well.
Because if the San Francisco 49ers adds a mobile quarterback with the arm of Trey Lance or Justin Fields, the rest of the NFL may be in trouble.

49ers select QB Trey Lance in Chad Reuter’s last simulated draft
By David Bonilla

Today’s negotiations left analysts struggling to update their simulated drafts. The San Francisco 49ers is suddenly in a position to select one of the best potential defenders. Trevor Lawrence will almost certainly be No. 1 overall for the Jacksonville Jaguars. The New York Jets must select Zach Wilson as the second overall choice. NFL Media analyst Chad Reuter released an updated mock draft and Lawrence and Wilson took the place of the 49ers in third place. Still, it leaves San Francisco with several options, and Reuter has the team with former North Dakota state quarterback Trey Lance. “The 49ers had a great deal of negotiation with the

Jeremiah says signs point to Trey Lance for 49ers, don’t rule out Mac Jones

Everyone is discussing Friday’s massive trade between the San Francisco 49ers and the Miami Dolphins, moving first from 12th overall to 3rd, while renouncing future first-round players. This puts the team in a privileged position to select one of the best potential defenders in next month’s draft. It will not be Trevor Lawrence of Clemson, who should be selected first by the Jacksonville Jaguars. BYU’s Zach Wilson can go to the New York Jets in second place. Assuming that this is how things are going to play out, NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah had some ideas about what general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan could do in third place. “This is what we hope for, and this is

49ers switch to Ohio State QB Justin Fields in the latest PFF simulation sketch

With the initial flurry of free agency fading, Michael Renner of Pro Football Focus released the latest review of the analytics site and had the San Francisco 49ers select their quarterback of the future, while freeing up some wage cap space in the process. Renner has general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan climbing to fourth place in an exchange with the Atlanta Falcons to catch Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields. “The 49ers give up on a future first and some changes to get their guy,” wrote Renner. “The choice not only represents a possible update in relation to Jimmy Garoppolo, but also

Lance Zierlein has 49ers selecting Virginia Tech CB Caleb Farley in the latest simulation draft

Note: Lance Zierlein updated his mock draft after this article was first published. It now includes 49ers falling from 12th to 14th place. The article has been updated, but it also includes Zierlein’s original explanation for the 12th place selection. NFL Media analyst Lance Zierlein asked the San Francisco 49ers to select quarterback Trey Lance left the state of North Dakota in his first mock draft, which was released last month. Lance’s stock has since increased. Zierlein now has the former Bison as the third defender selected in
