New BMW M2 Coupe returns in close-up spy photos, hiding its secrets

It was yesterday that our spies took what appeared to be a fully electric BMW M2 mule test in northern Europe and now we have new photos to share. This time, the M2 in question is the traditional six-in-line model with its rear-wheel drive layout and, hopefully, a manual gearbox to boot. He was seen outside the Nürburgring wearing a lot of makeup to hide his production body.

BMW has yet to reveal the next generation of the Series 2 Coupe, but it looks like the top-of-the-line model isn’t far behind, considering that the test vehicle looks virtually ready to lose camouflage. From the huge front brakes to the quadruple hoods, it is very easy to say that this version will be at the top of the food chain in the 2er hierarchy.

The heavy cover does its job of completely masking the design of the car, but you can tell that the M2 has a different handle design, with a hilarious fake white sticker above it. Zoom in and you will see small rivets holding additional layers of camouflage around the rear pillar, probably to better hide the Hofmeister twist. A subtle spoiler on the trunk lid further denotes that this is not your mediocre Series 2.

The standard coupe and its high-performance M2 counterpart will be the only models in the BMW 2 Series line to maintain the RWD layout, as the Active Tourer minivan and the Gran Coupe are both based on a front-wheel drive architecture, with xDrive available. We didn’t see pictures of a future convertible that would also maintain the happy tail layout, so we don’t know if there will be another Series 2 with a folding roof.

Wait for the BMW M to insert the new 3.0-liter M4 into the engine compartment, but reduce it so that it doesn’t blink on the older brother’s foot. We are hearing that it will have more than 400 horsepower, even in its basic form, with subsequent spicy derivatives to add ponies at the end of this decade.

The standard Series 2 Coupé may possibly debut before the end of the year, so the M2 is expected to be unveiled sometime in 2022.
