The history of LG’s smartphone division has been one of constant failure and tragedy in recent years. Despite their constant attempts to innovate and shake things up, they haven’t really managed to profit from their smartphone business. While they often make headlines and do their best to keep things up to date with weird concepts like the LG Wing, the reality is that its smartphone division is still constantly losing money and its efforts to turn the tide are not working very well. LG was in talks to sell its smartphone division, but its search for a buyer is not going very well, and they may be forced to throw in the towel and close their smartphone business.
This report comes from Dong-A Ilbo South Korean newspaper (via Bloomberg) Previously, a company spokesman told us that his smartphone business would not disappear anytime soon (before a new report appears saying quite the opposite, a few days later). They even had big ambitions for 2021, including a scrollable smartphone, which even achieved Bluetooth SIG certification. This smartphone was reportedly discarded, and this new report also says that the company is archiving all of its new smartphone launches for the first half of 2021.
LG is in talks with companies like Volkswagen and Vingroup JSC from Vietnam to potentially sell its smartphone division, but those negotiations so far appear to have failed. If they can’t find a buyer, LG will have to shut down its smartphone division completely.
That would be a big loss for the Android ecosystem. Although LG has not done well in recent years in terms of sales, it has been a historically important player in the Android ecosystem, launching legendary smartphones like the LG G2. They were also the creators of other iconic phones, such as the Nexus 5, Nexus 5X and Google Pixel 2 XL.
