Sherwin told the CBS News “60 Minutes” program in an interview that aired on Sunday that it was “unmistakable” that the former president was “the magnet that brought people to DC on the 6th” before his supporters invaded the Capitol building.
“Now the question is is he criminally guilty for everything that happened during the siege, during the rape?” Sherwin later said Scott Pelley asked if Trump’s role was part of the investigation.
“We have a lot of people – we have Ohio soccer moms who were arrested saying ‘Well, I did it because my president said I had to return our home,'” he said. “It moves the needle in that direction. Perhaps the president is to blame for these actions ”.
But the federal prosecutor added that two militia members said publicly: “’You know what? We did this because Trump only talks about a big game. He’s just talk. We did what he wouldn’t do ‘”.
Pelley asked Sherwin, “In short, do you have investigators investigating the president’s role?”
“We have people looking at everything, right,” replied Sherwin. “Everything is being examined.”
Up until last Friday, Sherwin led the Justice Department’s investigation into the deadly January 6 riot, which accused more than 400 defendants for their alleged involvement in the rape.
Trump has faced accusations, particularly from Democratic lawmakers, that his call for supporters to demonstrate in DC and march to the Capitol on the day that Congress was scheduled to confirm the Electoral College vote sparked the violence.
The former president was impeached for the second time a week before the end of his presidency because of the insurrection, but was acquitted by the Senate. Ten House Republicans voted in favor of impeachment and seven Senate Republicans voted to condemn Trump.
