LINCOLN, Nebraska – The CDC’s complete review of the death of a Nebraska man who received the COVID-19 vaccine is complete. The CDC found no evidence that the vaccine contributed to the man’s death and, in his opinion, was “coincidental”.
According to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, an almost 40-year-old man with various comorbidities died between 1 and 2 weeks after receiving his first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. The man was also a resident of a long-term institution.
The death was recorded on VAERS, the Adverse Vaccine Event Notification System, a national vaccine safety surveillance program administered by the CDC and the FDA. Whenever death or any adverse event occurs after vaccination, the case must be reported to VAERS. This process allows the CDC and the FDA to closely monitor and assess any adverse events, for ongoing safety assessments. The death occurred on January 17 and the man received the vaccine in the first week of January.
Dr. Gary Anthone, Medical Director of Nebraska, said: “We cannot say enough about the importance of Nebraska Finishing Strong, as we see a light at the end of the tunnel with three vaccines available in our state. It is simply the best protection we have and the best chance to return to a sense of normalcy. I urge Nebraskans to sign up for vaccinate.Ne.Gov so that they are notified when it is their turn. Individuals with high-risk conditions should consult their physician about the best approach to vaccinating. “
