Oscar will be safe for COVID with open-air ceremony and fewer presenters

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences began to invite talents to present at the 93rd Oscars.

With these invitations, more details emerged about how the producers intend to keep the ceremony safe for COVID. The ceremony is likely to be an open-air production at Los Angeles’ historic Union Station. The Academy had previously announced that the station would be used in some way other than the Dolby Theater.

A normal year can have up to 50 non-nominated presenters, but that number is likely to be reduced by more than half. The program typically includes one or more people presenting a prize, as well as musical performances, packages of best photo clips and more. Presenters are likely to have only one guest, as is the case with nominees. Perhaps, a source speculated, the nominees will also be invited to present this year.

A reduced red carpet will also take place in an outdoor location.

However, nothing is definitive, as plans may change depending on several factors, including health restrictions and how many people decide to attend the ceremony, as well as weather conditions.

Traditional presenters – winners from the previous year presenting their category, but of the opposite genre – were invited to present months ago, as always happens in Oscar planning. It is not clear whether the current plans have already been explained to them.

The Academy declined to comment on this story.

The most recent details appear a few days later Variety was the first to report that Academy President David Rubin sent a letter to all members of the Academy describing this year’s celebration.

The Academy will not hold any face-to-face events, including nomination projections, annual nominees’ lunch or other programming. In addition, the only people who will be able to attend the Oscar will be the nominees themselves, their guests and the presenters of the ceremony.

Using Union Station was announced when the appointments were revealed Monday morning by Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas.

While the Golden Globe included nominees Extending the show, the presenters appeared in person at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles or at the Rainbow Room in New York. The hearing was limited to a small group of frontline workers at any location.

The highly praised Grammy ceremony included nominees sitting at socially distant tables outside the Los Angeles Convention Center.
