Demi Lovato revealed that her near-fatal 2018 overdose left her legally blind.
In the upcoming documentary “Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil”, which debuted on SXSW on Tuesday, the 28-year-old singer is as sincere as ever about her battle with addiction, her sexual identity and what happened overnight in who overdosed in July 2018 and was rushed to the hospital.
In a new interview with the New York Times before the official release of the four-part documentary on YouTube on March 23, Lovato said he woke up in the vision-impaired intensive care unit.
“It was interesting how quickly I adapted,” she told the outlet. “I didn’t give myself time to really be sad about it. I was just like, how do I fix this?”

Lovato revealed in her June 2018 single, “Sober”, that she relapsed after six years of sobriety. She was hospitalized in July for an overdose of an unconfirmed drug just days before starting a series of live performances.

Waking up legally blind meant that Lovato struggled to do everyday activities, like reading a book. The outlet notes that she “spent her time recovering her 10-year sleep, playing board games or taking a single walk on the hospital floor to exercise”.
She got blind spots and looked at the phone using her peripheral vision. She also used voice notes to enter the details of the report.
According to the Times, Lovato suffered “three strokes, a heart attack and organ failure” as a result of the overdose. Strokes caused brain damage.

Because of the damage to his vision, Lovato can no longer drive. The outlet notes that she describes one of the symptoms as “similar sunspots”.

Since surviving the overdose, Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande’s manager Scooter Braun have hired Lovato for their team. His goal, he told the outlet, is for the troubled singer to “live a happy life.”
Last year, Lovato also became engaged to her ex Max Ehrich during the quarantine. The engagement lasted a few months, with the stars ending in September.
“This past year has given me a lot of personal growth and has been very beneficial for my spiritual evolution,” reflected Lovato.
Also detailed in the documentary is the scary night she was transported to the hospital in July 2018. During that night, she reveals that she was sexually abused by her drug dealer.

“I had a flash of him on top of me. I saw that flash and said ‘Yes’,” said the pop star. “It was only a month after the overdose that I realized, ‘You weren’t in any frame of mind to make a consensual decision.'”
According to star friend Sirah Mitchell, Lovato received heroin “mixed with fentanyl” that July night, and the drug dealer “ended up getting her very high and leaving her to die”.
“When they found me, I was naked, blue. I was literally left to die after he took advantage of me, ”says Lovato.

Unfortunately, the alleged encounter with the drug dealer was not Lovato’s first non-consensual sexual incident, she says.
“When I was a teenager, I was in a very similar situation,” she reveals on docuseries. “I lost my virginity in a rape.”

“Both times were textbook trauma scenarios, and I really fought for years, which is why I had a hard time accepting the fact that it was a rape when it happened,” says Lovato.
