Interviews for the new vote, which was conducted March 12-15, began the day after Biden signed the bill. The results should not be compared with the previous questions in the POLITICO / Morning Consult poll on the bill, as these questions described its content. The new poll asked voters whether they supported or opposed “the $ 1.9 trillion coronavirus aid package that President Biden has sanctioned”.
The Biden government is promoting the new law, sending the president and other officials on the road as part of its “Help Is Here” tour. Meanwhile, as Republicans head for popular support for the law, Republican Party leaders hope that highlighting other spending included as part of the measure and the party vote to enact it will lessen their support among the electorate before the next election.
In follow-up questions, the majority also expressed support for two of the most important provisions of the law: the stimulus checks that some Americans have already received and the extent of unemployment insurance benefits.
“The broad bipartisan support for stimulus checks is evidence of the widespread awareness that many Americans need a lifeline now,” said John Leer, economist at Morning Consult. “It is no surprise that the extent of unemployment benefits is also extremely popular: Americans recognize that unemployed workers deserve additional financial support until employment growth resumes.”
With just under two months of his nascent presidency, Biden remains popular, reaching 62% approval rating in the new poll. Only about a third of voters, 34%, disapprove of Biden’s job as president.
The POLITICO / Morning Consult poll interviewed 1,993 registered voters and has a sample margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
