Xbox Series X VR is still not being worked on ‘at this point’, according to Microsoft

A Microsoft spokesman told IGN that VR is not coming to Xbox Series X | S at this point, after it was reported that the Xbox console was referring to a VR peripheral. IGN Italy reported that while testing the new Xbox Wireless Headset, a warning appeared on its Xbox Series X system saying that its “VR Headset” needed an update. This suggests that the Xbox Series X supports VR peripherals in some capacity.

However, a Microsoft spokesman says this is not the case. In a statement to IGN, the company says, “The copy of this error message is inaccurate due to a location bug. VR for the console is not the focus for us at this point.”Source: Giovanni Marrelli, IGN Italy

Microsoft was asked in the past whether it would bring virtual reality to the Xbox, but the company accepted the idea. Prior to the Xbox Series X reveal in 2019, Phil Spencer said that VR is not part of his next generation plans because “no one is asking for it.”

Compare that to the PlayStation, which was one of the first to adopt the VR console and was quite successful with its adventure. The company recently announced a new VR headset for the PlayStation 5.

Xbox Wireless Headset Review

Meanwhile, Microsoft is not completely out of the VR game, although most, if not all, of its efforts are entirely on the PC side. The Windows mixed reality platform works with virtual reality games, and the HoloLens AR headset recently unveiled a Pokémon demo created in partnership with Niantic using the Microsoft Mesh mixed reality platform.

So at the moment, at least, Microsoft seems content to keep AR / VR on the PC while focusing on other endeavors for its Xbox Series X hardware.
