Austin, Texas – Texas Baseball No. 19 launched its second shutout of the season, with a 3-0 win over South Carolina No. 12, winning the series. The Longhorns (10-5) will go to the sweep over the Gamecocks series on Sunday at 11am.
Tristan Stevens hurled six innings of shutout with five strikeouts to win his first win of the season. He allowed only five strokes and a walk in the game.
Palmer Wenzel came out of the bullpen and launched three stellar innings to register his first defense as a Longhorn. The transfer of graduation allowed only two strokes, throwing three frames without goals.
All the races Texas needed came at the bottom of the fifth entry, in a pair of solo homers from Peyton Powell and Mitchell Daly. Powell’s home run was his first hit of the season and Daly was the first home run of his career.
The Longhorns had another race in eighth, when Mike Antico walked and went around to score in a wild shot and two draws.
Stevens worked around a base aisle in each of the first two entrances, and in the third he navigated a loaded base, a situation outside. He then worked out his first 1-2-3 game in the fourth.
In the fifth, Stevens circumvented an initial error and a single one to keep Gamecocks off the board. In his final work shift, Stevens used a 4-6-3 double game to neutralize South Carolina.
The combination of Stevens and Wenzel kept the South Carolina hitters out of balance for the entire game, inducing 15 ball exits on the ground, including a pair of double throws.
