Clyburn defends accessible internet accessibility

WASHINGTON (WCSC) – Majority leader in the House, Jim Clyburn, and American Senator Amy Klobuchar have presented new bills to provide Internet services to rural communities.

Clyburn, a Democrat who represents South Carolina’s 6th congressional district in Congress, said HR 1783, the Accessible Internet Law for All, would authorize more than $ 94 billion to ensure that underserved and underserved communities had access to the Internet from high speed at affordable prices.

“Access to broadband today will have the same dramatic impact on rural communities as rural electrification efforts in the past century,” said Clyburn. “When I formed the Rural Broadband Task Force, our mission was to address the digital divide. The disparate effects of this division were amplified during the COVID-19 pandemic and exposed the urgent need to guarantee universal access to high-speed Internet. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the House and Senate to enact the Accessible and Accessible Internet Law for All ”.

Klobuchar, D-Minnesota, who serves as co-president of the Senate Broadband Caucus, presented the bill to the Senate.

“When we invest in broadband infrastructure, we invest in opportunities for all Americans,” she said. “In 2021, we should be able to bring high-speed internet to all families in America – regardless of their postal code. This legislation will help to reduce the digital divide once and for all. “

This legislation is the product of collaboration between members of the Casa Rural Broadband Task Force and the Casa Energy and Commerce Committee.
