Governor Cox provides the COVID-19 update while Utah sees 646 new cases, 23 deaths, 34,000 vaccinations

SALT LAKE CITY – The number of COVID-19 cases in Utah increased by 646 on Thursday, with an additional 23 deaths and 34,290 vaccinations reported, according to the Utah Department of Health.

Fifteen of the deaths occurred before February 11, but were still being investigated by state coroners, according to the health department. The death toll on Thursday puts Utah above 2,000 deaths since the start of the pandemic, with 2,015 deaths in total reported through Thursday.

The average number of positive cases per day for seven days is now 524, according to the health department. The rate of positive test per day for that period of time reported using the “people over people” method is now 8.4%. The positive test rate per day, averaged over seven days calculated using the “test over test” method is now 4%.

There are now 167 COVID-19 patients currently hospitalized in Utah, state data show. In total, 936,681 vaccines were administered in the state, compared to 902,391 on Wednesday.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox is also providing an update on the pandemic COVID-19 at a news conference on Thursday morning.

The event started at 11am and is being broadcast live here. Lieutenant Governor Deidre Henderson and Utah State Department of Health epidemiologist Dr. Angela Dunn are expected to join Cox at the news conference.
