Jesus. OK. Look, I like capitalism as much as the next idiot who blogs for a living, but what is happening now regarding the efficient allocation of Earth’s precious resources?
Let me paint a picture for you. Youtooz, the company that made a stonks guy figurine, has now created a one-foot tall version of the lo-fi chill beats anime girl, complete with table and study materials. You know her; she is always studying while you hear said beats. According Hypebeast, the figurine falls for public consumption on April 2 at 3 pm ET.
In theory, I like what’s going on here. Before it became a kind of meme, anime chill lo-fi to work and study was an inaccurate description of the post-Nujabes diaspora – you know, the things Jun Seba did in Samurai Champloo Music Record: Departure, the soundtrack to Shinichirō Watanabe’s brilliant anime. Whatever happened between 2004 (when the TV show and the album were released) and now it must have been very traumatic; the sound made its way through countless producers and became something like Muzak – music to be productive.
Anyway, now we are at the bottom of the well. On YouTube, ChilledCow is probably the best-known channel for lo-fi goodness, broadcasting like they do to tens of thousands of listeners any minute on any day. And yes, the Youtooz figurine is a replica of from them perpetually studying anime girl. This looks cool; she has a backpack.
But that still doesn’t answer my question. I think it doesn’t matter? I love the figurine, but I’m not sure if it needs to exist.
