Utah mother dies four days after taking second dose of COVID vaccine

A 39-year-old Utah mother died just four days after receiving her second dose of the Modern COVID-19 vaccine, according to a report on Wednesday that investigated the vaccine’s side effects.

Kassidi Kurill, who lived in Ogden, took the second dose on Monday, February 1st. As of Friday night that week, she was dead, according to 2News, which was the first to report on Kurill’s case.

“She looked healthy as a horse,” Kurill’s father, Alfred Hawley, told Fox News. “She had no known underlying conditions.”

On Tuesday, Kurill’s condition worsened. Her father said she complained that she was drinking fluids for not urinating and that she had a headache and nausea. On Wednesday, she felt a little better. But on Thursday, her heart raced and Hawley took her to the hospital.

“When I took her to the emergency room, she was wearing makeup and false eyelashes. I mean, she wouldn’t go,” said Hawley.

Kurill started to vomit. The doctors did blood tests and she became less consistent, Hawley said. On Thursday night, she was transported to the Trauma Center in Murray for a liver transplant.

Doctors repeatedly tried to stabilize her for a liver transplant, but her condition worsened and, on Friday morning, she was unable to speak.

“They were trying to get it to a point where it was stable enough for a liver transplant. And they just couldn’t keep it stable,” said Hawley. “She got worse over the course of the day. And at nine o’clock, she passed.”

Hawley told Fox News that an autopsy report is pending. The family, in turn, created a GoFundMe page for a “Kassidi Kurill and Emilia Memorial Fund”, in honor of Kurill and her nine-year-old daughter.

Although side effects of the vaccine are common, the resulting deaths are incredibly rare. According to the Vaccine Adverse Event Notification System (VAERS) of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 92 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine were administered in the U.S. between December 14, 2020 and 8 March 2021. Of those 92 million, VAERS received 1,637 death notifications (0.0018%) among people who received the COVID-19 vaccine.

“So far, VAERS has not detected patterns in the cause of death that would indicate a safety problem with the COVID-19 vaccines,” says the CDC on its website.

Hawley, a civil servant and member of the National Guard, told Fox News that he acknowledges that his daughter’s tragic death was one in a million.

“It looks like she was the only one who had a terrible reaction,” he said.

Despite the loss of his daughter, Hawley, who is 69 and a diabetic, he said he had the vaccine himself because of the threat that COVID poses to his demographic group.

For skeptics about getting the vaccine, Hawley said “the vaccine will help you”.

“But if you have a reaction to that, don’t ignore it. Don’t be stoic and just say, ‘Oh, I’ll be fine,'” said Hawley. “Pay attention. If it persists for more than a day, you should go to the doctor. And make sure that you are not one in a million anymore.”
