Wildlife agency asks SC residents to drop bird feeders for now

COLOMBIA, SC (WMBF) – South Carolina residents are asked to remove their bird feeders by early spring, after an increase in mortality reports for certain species, officials said.

According to information from the SC Department of Natural Resources, the agency has seen an increase in mortality reports from Pinus Siskins and other species.

Although pines are more susceptible than other species to getting sick from dirty bird feeders, there has been an increase in the number of reports the SCDNR has received from across the state in recent weeks, a press release said.

Authorities said those who have bird feeders should remove them until early April, when the Pine Siskins began to migrate north.

The department emphasizes that temporarily removing bird feeders from backyards will not prevent wild birds from returning after the feeder is placed back.

“While many Southern Carolinians like to feed wild birds, those who have bird feeders must ensure that their feeders remain clean. Without proper care, bird feeders can harm, rather than benefit, the local bird population, ”said the SCDNR statement. “Dirty feeders can house spoiled feed, seed shells and waste that can become a source of bacteria, mold and diseases that can be transmitted among birds.
