The floor for the 2021 salary cap was set at $ 180 million. As expected, the ceiling will not be much higher.
As a source with knowledge of the dynamics explained to PFT, the fact that the franchise label deadline has not been extended by the league and union can be interpreted as an indication that the limit will not significantly exceed the $ 180 million floor. According to the source, the limit will be a maximum of US $ 183 million.
It could have been much worse. As the NFL Players Association explained in an email to all players, a copy of which the PFT obtained, players received their full payment in 2020, without a penny placed on deposit (unlike other sports leagues). In addition, the union explained to players that, without the CBA finalized last year by the league and the NFLPA or the July negotiation that allowed the season to continue, the salary cap would have been “tens of millions” below $ 180 millions.
The union also predicts that normal growth to the limit will resume in 2021, when the new TV deals begin and the stadiums (as expected) start to fill up with paying fans.
This is good news for everyone – league, players, media and fans. And it is another sign that gradually, but inevitably, normality will return.
