After the desktop and mobile updates last week, Chrome OS 89 is starting to launch today. There are a number of major usability improvements in this version that will be available in the coming days.
Phone Hub allows users to control their paired phones from Chromebooks. Appearing next to the status information pill, tapping opens a lower right panel that shows the phone’s status first, such as cell signal and battery percentage. The main actions allow you to enable the access / tethering point, silence your phone with DND and locate / call a lost phone. Another aspect of the phone’s hub shows its last two open Chrome tabs on Android. You can also receive and respond to notifications.
Likewise, Google reiterated how Nearby sharing is coming to transfer files between Android and other Chromebooks. This is set for the “next months”. Wi-Fi sync now works to share network credentials between Chrome and Android.
Version 89 features a “Print Screen”Tool aimed at educators who want to register what is on their displays for classes. Once launched from the new quick settings shortcut, your current screen is grayed out and a floating panel appears at the bottom. Users can decide between a screen capture or a video capture, although there are three types of area:
- Full screen
- Partial
- Window
In the meantime, captured images and saved files now appear in a “To charge”Next to Phone Hub. In the Files application, clicking with the right mouse button reveals a new option “Pin to shelf”. For example, this is ideal when working on presentations or documents and adding images quickly.
Finally, the Gallery tool has a new “Note”Pen or highlight capability quickly. There are five sizes ranging from extrafine to thick and 20 colors
Chrome OS 89 makes all application icons circular. Unique, non-conforming shapes are placed in circles with sharp backgrounds. This change applies to the shelf and the application launcher. Some original Chrome and Android icons already fit, but many others do not, although there are new icons for Calculator and Screen.
- Media controls are now directly integrated into Quick settings, while you can attach the media player directly to the shelf.
- THE Clipboard – accessed with the Everything + V button – has been updated to show the last five items copied, including text and images.
- When you right-click on a word or passage, Chrome OS now offers branding assistant Quick answers which may include definitions, translations or unit conversions.
- THE Writing Desks The feature will persist during reboots, while right clicking on a window allows you to send to a specific space.
- Tapping Share on a supported app or website will show a list of destinations to which you can send a file directly.
- Select to speak has new controls to speed up, slow down and pause the reading voice in real time, as well as skip to different parts.
- THE password box on the login screen it has a new form, while the inserted text does not appear centered.
- Chrome OS now supports scanning compatible multifunction printers.
- The Camera application can be used to scan QR codes, with recognition occurring automatically.
