Hardware modders on YouTube created what is believed to be the world’s first water-cooled system PS5.
A 13-minute video from the Vietnamese channel Modding Cafe details the entire construction process involved in building a complete liquid cooling system for Sony’s latest console, including a step-by-step how to deconstruct the latest generation hardware.
Of course, it is worth bearing in mind that if you try to do this, it will surely void your PS5’s warranty.
At the end of the video (around 12 minutes), the presenters put their innovative system to the test, with surprisingly effective results. The water cooler is able to successfully stabilize the heat emitted by the PS5, limiting the hot air around the console’s back plate.
The channel also suggests building a refrigeration system variant for the mass market. The video description says: “We are still preparing for a commercial version [of the system] and also ready to integrate the water-cooled PS5 into one of our next PCs. ”
Judging by the appearance – like a weapon belonging to Mr. Freeze – we will bet that many people would line up to have their PS5 cooled by the peculiar water-based system of the Modding Cafe.
Custom work
Needless to say, this is not the first PS5 console to receive a makeover.
While Sony’s flagship hardware is currently only available in a basic white variant, you can still buy custom faceplates that enhance the aesthetics of your next generation system. A company called dbrand offers PS5 “black cards”, which are available for $ 49.99 (about £ 40 / $ AU60).
Given that we’ve seen how easy it is to dissect a PS5 system – there’s a official disassembly video from Sony, if relying on internet modders is not your thing – changing the color of your console is not the daunting task that may seem at first glance.
Of course, if you prefer to skip DIY, you can always opt for a 24K gold PS5. It costs about $ 10,000 (about £ 7,700 / AU $ 14,000), but who doesn’t have that kind of money out there?
