Opening of COVID’s second vaccination site in Washtenaw County as vaccine supply increases, officials say

WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI – Another mass vaccination site is opening in Washtenaw County to better serve residents on the west side of the county, health officials said.

The Pierce Lake elementary school in Chelsea, 275 N. Freer Road, will open as a vaccination clinic on Tuesday, March 9, in collaboration with St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea hospital and the Chelsea school district, according to the Washtenaw County Department of Health.

The school building is not being used by the district.

The Chelsea site will provide approximately 324 vaccinations a day and add additional days as supplies allow, health officials said.

“We are happy to collaborate with the Washtenaw County Health Department and St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea to provide a location in western Washtenaw County for our community to receive their vaccinations,” said Chelsea School District Superintendent Julie Helber .

The Eastern Michigan University Convocation Center has been used as a vaccination site since the health department started administering the vaccine.

“We continue to use all of our resources to ensure that we get the vaccine available as quickly as possible,” said Jimena Loveluck, health officer for the Washtenaw County Department of Health. “Our vaccine supplies are increasing and we hope to vaccinate everyone who is ready to be vaccinated as soon as possible.”

St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea has been supplying COVID-19 vaccines to eligible residents in western Washtenaw County and will continue to do so in the short term, but the hospital will eventually transfer its operations entirely to the Pierce Lake Elementary site, officials said.

Individuals eligible for vaccination according to state prioritization guidelines can request an appointment online or by calling the Department of Health at 734-544-6700 or 211.

As of Monday, March 8, those aged 50 and over with medical problems or disabilities can apply for an appointment to be vaccinated. Caregivers, family members and guardians aged 16 and over can also apply for consultations.

Those who are eligible are likely to have to wait several weeks or more for an available vaccination appointment, depending on supplies, health officials said.
