Washington placed the franchise’s brand on right guard Brandon Scherff for the second year in a row, the team announced Monday night.
Scherff will receive $ 18.03 million in the 2021 season – a 20% increase from last season. But Washington still hopes to hire him for a long-term deal. You have until July 15 to do so, and a source described the conversations so far as friendly.
Scherff, who turned 29 in December, played for the franchise brand last season, winning $ 15.03 million. He also became the first Washington player to be named the first All-Pro team since punter Matt Turk in 1996. Scherff made four Pro Bowls, including the previous two.
The coaches liked how Scherff played inside, but also how he blocked in motion in the screen game.
But injuries have also been a problem. Scherff has not played all 16 games since 2016 and has lost 18 combined games in the past four years. He ended up on injury reserve in 2017 and ’18.
Washington selected Scherff as the fifth overall choice in the 2015 draft, with the intention of trying it out first on the right. But Washington moved him to the right guard at the beginning of his first camp and started Morgan Moses on the tackle, creating a strong tandem on the right.
While in Iowa, Scherff was named the 2014 Outland Trophy winner as the best offensive striker in the country.
