Multiple pourers this morning I suggested the idea of March 23 for the next Apple product event. Apple often holds spring events to announce new products, but it is not a guarantee. Depending on the year, Apple sometimes launches products simply through press releases, such as last year with the iPad Pro 2020.
The lines are blurred today, as the ‘Apple events’ are all held virtually because of the pandemic, but the main difference between an event and press release announcements is the inclusion of a prepared video presentation.
What is expected for March 23? That is not yet clear, but there are persistent rumors surrounding AirTags, Apple’s competitor for the Tile tracker, new iPads and AirPod updates.
In the latest iOS 14.5 beta, Apple has enabled the Items tab in the Find My app for all users. This is a good indicator that Apple’s Bluetooth tracker is imminent (after about two years of rumors that the product is in development). However, the Items tab will also be used by third-party accessories that integrate with the Find My network, so technically, the two are not inextricably linked.
We also heard rumors about an update to the iPad Pro line, perhaps featuring updated screen technology and a faster A14X chip. Apple updated the iPad Pro last year with the addition of a LiDAR depth scanner, but the device has hardly changed.
There have also been leaks of new third generation AirPods, which will embrace many of the features of their more expensive AirPod Pro brothers. However, it is not clear whether they are ready for launch this month.
Apple also raised speculation about this year’s Mac product line even more last week, by discontinuing the iMac Pro. A radically redesigned iMac with fine bezels and internal silicone components from Apple is due to be released later this year, with the discontinuation iMac Pro suggesting that this will happen sooner or later. The new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are also expected to launch in 2021, but this looks like something Apple would plan for fall instead of spring.
