Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty on Sunday sentenced those who damaged property and assaulted the police during an out-of-control party at University Hill on Saturday night.
The crowd gathered near Pennsylvania Avenue and 10th Street drew up to 800 revelers on Saturday, who filled the street without social distance and wearing little mask. The crowd set off fireworks and overturned a car before the Boulder police came in around 8:30 pm and ordered everyone to leave. Three policemen were hit by bricks or stones and suffered minor injuries during the incident, the police said. The policemen implanted what appeared to be gas in the crowd at a certain point on Saturday night.
The district attorney’s office will work with the Boulder police to identify and prosecute partiers who have damaged property or assaulted the police, Dougherty said in a statement on Sunday.
“Their cruel disrespect for the safety and well-being of our community is shameful,” said Dougherty of the partygoers. “There is no excuse for this conduct, especially while people in this community are enduring the pandemic.”
The University of Colorado Boulder said on Saturday that all students who “engage in acts of violence” against law enforcement or first aid officials will be removed from school and not readmitted.
After the party ended on Saturday, some other CU Boulder students walked down the street with bags of garbage, collecting the garbage left during the out-of-control party. They planned to continue the cleaning effort on Sunday.
CU Boulder returned to face-to-face and virtual hybrid learning in mid-February.
Boulder police did not immediately respond to a request for more information about the party on Sunday, but a press conference with city officials was scheduled for 1 pm.
