Boston Bruins defender Brandon Carlo was discharged from hospital on Saturday after spending the night after a blow to the head of Washington Capitals striker Tom Wilson, who was suspended for seven games.
Wilson has been suspended and will miss games in the next two weeks after a Zoom hearing to discuss the incident.
“What separates this blow from others is the direct and significant contact with the face and head of a defenseless player, causing a violent impact with the glass,” said the league when announcing the suspension. “This is a player with a substantial disciplinary history who takes advantage of an opponent who is in a helpless position and does so with significant strength.”

Wilson will be able to play when Washington hosts Rangers on March 20. He will lose $ 311,782 in salary.
Wilson is one of the most penalized and suspended players in the league, but he is not considered a repeat offender in the collective agreement because his last suspension was over 18 months ago. This is his fifth suspension, and Wilson has been fined twice before in his NHL career.
“It was a hockey success for me,” said Capitals coach Peter Laviolette after Saturday’s training in Philadelphia. “If this is a suspended play, then any hitting will probably have to be removed because he didn’t take any steps, he didn’t aim for the head, a player was against the boards, he was standing and Tom hit him hard.”
The league players’ security department said that the totality of circumstances – from Carlo’s vulnerable position to Wilson’s angle of approach – made the move suspended.
“Personally, I think it was a straight shot,” said team-mate Nic Dowd. “He definitely didn’t mean to hurt Carlo in any way, and I think he led with his hands down and on his chest and I think it was just an unfortunate event in the way it ended.”
Carlo’s injury contributed to the length of Wilson’s suspension. Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said Carlo returned home and did not attend training.

Carlo left Friday night’s game against the Capitals after Wilson hit him at the end of the first period, hitting his head on the glass with his hands and club. Cassidy called the coup “predatory. No penalty was applied to the move.
Trent Frederic and Jarred Tinordi, from Boston, fought Wilson later in the Bruins’ 5-1 victory.
