A person killed in a shooting at the George Floyd memorial in Minneapolis

“The victim and the suspect disagreed verbally and the suspect shot the victim,” said Minneapolis Police Department spokesman John Elder.

Police responded to the 38th Street East and Chicago Avenue area, Elder said, after determining which shots were fired using an automatic sound detection system called ShotSpotter.

When they arrived at the memorial site, “the police were met with some interference in the scene,” said Elder, but did not provide further clarification.

They were then informed that the victim had already been taken to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The victim’s name has not been released.

The sniper was not identified or apprehended, Elder said, and police are asking the public for help in locating the escape vehicle, described as a light-colored Suburban with firearm damage.

“Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers of Minnesota,” said Elder. “All tips are anonymous and anyone who provides information that leads to an arrest and conviction is eligible for a financial award.”

An investigation is underway, he added.

Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, died on May 25, 2020, after claiming he could not breathe while a policeman knelt on his neck for nearly eight minutes.
In September, the Minneapolis City Council voted unanimously to approve the renaming of the intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue after Floyd.
