Considering its huge armies of fans, you can also call it When Spidey met Rey.
The new science fiction thriller Chaos Walking, directed by Doug Liman and based on Patrick Ness’s YA trilogy, stars Tom Holland as a young man on a distant planet where a strange phenomenon makes the thoughts of men (but not women) audible, and Daisy Ridley as a space traveler who lands in your all-male village.
“Daisy was the first to come in, she was very anxious to do so, she wrote a long and pleasant letter to me about wanting to play Viola, and then Tom got on board, and the two were stratospheric,” Ness (A monster calls) told Yahoo Entertainment on a recent virtual press day about the film (see above). “So, we were lucky with the moment.”
Lucky part of the time, anyway. The project has been underway since 2011, and Ridley and Holland joined the cast in 2016 – a year after it first arrived in a galaxy far, far away in Star Wars The Force Awakens and the same year he made his debut as Peter Parker in Captain America Civil War. Chaos it was initially filmed in 2017, but later went through reshoots in 2019, which were postponed because of the filming schedules of the star mega-franchises.
While long delays like this can be frustrating, Ridley remained optimistic about what is clearly a passionate project.
“Um, I think it’s a great hope, and I think it’s good to see promising films now,” Ridley tells us. “Two, many of the themes present in it are still present now, such as gender politics, and I know that Patrick compared the noise [the sound of men’s thoughts] slightly to social media and all those things are still really standing. But it is also a very beautiful film, as the way it was shot is stunning, there are incredible action sequences, I just think it fulfills a lot of requirements. “
Ridley downplayed his role in one of the project’s biggest selling points, the union of two of the greatest action heroes on the planet.
“I always felt very lucky because I never felt that something was really resting on my shoulders, I always felt really part of a team,” says Ridley of Star Wars. “I always had John [Boyega] and then the Oscar [Isaac] and Adam [Driver] and obviously [Harrison Ford] and Carrie [Fisher] and Mark [Hamill]. There were so many components to Star Wars that I never felt like I was out there alone.
“And I know that Zendaya is obviously a big part of Spider man, too, but I think it’s different. He’s Spider-Man in Spider man. It’s historic. Star Wars is historical, but I went in and played Rey’s new character. But that’s intense. So, I really don’t understand what Tom went through. But he does everything with grace, he really does, he handles everything very well. “
