STORRS, Conn. – The Huskies are in North Carolina this weekend getting ready to compete in the Carolina Classic. UConn will play scheduled games against Elon and the North Carolina host school on Friday, South Carolina on Saturday, then close the tournament on Sunday morning with a game against an opponent yet to be determined. The Huskies officially end the weekend with a fight against the Duke Blue Devils in the late afternoon. No fans will be allowed in the game.

Clearing the prizes …
UConn basically cleared the BIG EAST awards during the first two weeks of the season. After helping to lead the team in the 7-3 victory over No. 21 Baylor last Saturday, the senior Briana marcelino and freshman Jana Sanden took home the Big East Player of the Week honors. Marcelino won BIG EAST Player of the Week, while Sanden was classified as BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. Payton Kinney he was also nominated for the weekly honor roll.
Sanden and Marcelino join Kinney, who took home BIG EAST Freshman and Pitcher of the Week after an incredible weekend performance on his college debut.
Last timeout …
The Huskies went 2-3 at the Lone Star State Invitational last week. After stumbling on the first day, UConn recovered on the second day and won victories over Lamar and No. 21 Baylor. In the 7-3 victory over Lady Bears, Marcelino hit 2 of 2 on the board and scored a home run, two walks, three runs and two RBIs, while Sanden made 2 of 3 with two RBI and a double to help secure the victory . UConn was defeated by the seventh placed Longhorns in Sunday’s final.
Exploring the opponent …
- After a 4-1 opening weekend, UNC enters the weekend after closing Alabama’s Crimson Classic with a 1-4 record. Tar Heels won their only win of the weekend against Troy, closing Friday’s division with an 8-2 win with 12 hits … UNC leads the all-time series, 8-3.
- # 17 South Carolina posted a 6-1 record last week with the lone defeat reaching No. 16 Duke in the Gamecock Invitational final on Sunday. The Gamecocks beat their opponents 59-17 in seven games with a batting average of .353 … South Carolina leads the all-time series, 6-0.
- Elon arrives after falling into his series finale at Clemson on Sunday, February 28, when the Tigers completed the sweep of three games with an 8-0 win over Phoenix at McWhorter Stadium … Elon leads the series of all times, 1-0.
- # 14 Duke is leaving a weekend of 4-0, where he defeated his second opponent this season, placing 18th in South Carolina, 5-1, to close the Gamecock Invitational. After a 2-0 performance over the weekend, veteran Peyton St. George was named ACC’s pitcher of the week … Sunday will be the first meeting between schools.
