Alabama State and South Carolina State to play in spring 2021, fall 2023

The Alabama State Hornets and the South Carolina State Bulldogs have scheduled a football series at home and at home for the spring of 2021 and the fall of 2023, it was announced on Wednesday.

In the first game of the series, Alabama State will host South Carolina State at ASU Stadium in Montgomery, Alabama, on Saturday, April 3, 2021. Two seasons later, the Hornets will return to travel to face the Bulldogs at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium in Orangeburg, SC, on Saturday, September 16, 2023.

The states of Alabama and South Carolina first met on the football field in 1937 and the two schools played seven times overall. The Bulldogs won the most recent dispute in 2005, by 27-14, but the Hornets still have a 4-3 game advantage in the series.

The spring 2021 competition, which is just over four weeks away, was scheduled after the cancellation of two South Carolina games against Howard Bison. The games were canceled due to the “… District of Columbia restrictions on travel to and from the state of South Carolina” amid the new 2019 coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19).

Alabama State opened its spring 2021 football schedule with a 24-21 home loss to the Southern Jaguars on Friday, February 26. ASU is scheduled to return to the football field on Saturday, March 20, when it receives Jackson from state coach Deion Sanders Tigers in Montgomery.

The state of South Carolina was scheduled to open its spring ticket on Saturday, March 6, on the road against Howard. Instead, the Bulldogs will now host the Alabama A&M Bulldogs at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.
