Hulu reactivates picture-in-picture mode for iOS 14

Hulu has fully reactivated picture-in-picture (PiP) support on iOS, MacRumors reports, which means that watching half the TV on the network is once again possible for Hulu subscribers on iPhone and iPad devices. Hulu joins a collection of the main streaming services that support the feature on iOS, leaving YouTube as the main exception.

PiP for iPhones has been enabled for Hulu around the original release of iOS 14, but it was disabled later to “work on some updates to provide the best experience for our viewers,” said Hulu. Now that the feature is back, users can activate PiP mode by starting a program or movie and tapping the PiP button to place the video on a resizable floating player.

Hulu joins services like Disney Plus, Apple TV Plus, Netflix, Amazon Prime and HBO Max in support of PiP. All of these services now feature a dedicated PiP button like Hulu or standard for picture-in-picture if you swipe to the home screen while a video is playing.

YouTube remains the only one outside. Picture-in-picture is not allowed in Google’s official YouTube iOS app. Paying for YouTube Premium allows for background playback, but this only extends to audio on iOS. Google has also periodically disabled and enabled PiP support for the web version of YouTube on iOS. In October 2020, PiP was possible again, although it does not seem to work from today. At the moment, only iPhones running iOS 14.5 beta can PiP on the web version of YouTube, according to MacRumors.
