Super Mario 64 already has a healthy community of fans trying to break records to collect stars as quickly as possible, but now, there is a thriving scene surrounding parodies of the game as well. Super Mario 64 FPS, the ridiculous-but-mandatory first-person remake that gives Mario a gun, is seeing more people send times to a dedicated leaderboard now.
The idea of speedrun Super Mario 64 FPS it’s old; YouTuber EazySpeezy uploaded a video in a 70-star race in mid-2020. But more recently, YouTuber Alpharad threw his hat into the ring with a video detailing his own adventure learning the ins and outs of the game and the “best” strategies to achieve fast times. There are many wall cutouts. The game is also a little problematic, so runners have to deal with things like Mario being invisible and / or suddenly dying. It also means that you will be able to hear wonderful phrases about, say, when prospective runners should look for a bazooka for Mario.
Obviously, much of this is ironic and for entertainment – in the middle of his run, Alpharad starts using development tools and reprograms his mouse to make his way through the game. But in the video description, Alpharad encourages its viewers to submit their own races to Speedrun.com, the popular speedrunning website. Although the races have been underway since the beginning of the year, there is a new presentation dated 1 March. At 34 minutes and 21 seconds, the current record of 70 stars belongs to Scottish speedrunner Falsepog. There is also a race between Alpharad and EazySpeezy near the end of the video embedded above.
“I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Mario 64 it’s genuinely one of the sickest speed games ever made, and I just hope that one day they’ll let me play on GDQ, ”said Alpharad during the absurd video.
