UConn, Stanford, Texas A&M, South Carolina, top four in the initial analysis of the NCAA women’s basketball tournament

The NCAA announced the second revelation of the first 16 seeds projected in the Division I women’s basketball tournament, in addition to the fact that the regional ones – all played in San Antonio – will be named after famous places in the city: the Alamo, the Hemisfair, the Mercado and the River Walk.

Seed projections are through Saturday games and do not take Sunday games into account. The selection program is Monday, March 15 at 7:00 pm Eastern Time on ESPN.

UConn is the best overall seed, followed by No. 2 Stanford, No. 3 Texas A&M and No. 4 South Carolina. These are regional seeds # 1. In the first reveal on February 15, the top four were UConn, South Carolina, Stanford and Louisville. The Cardinals have dropped from the general No. 4 seed to No. 9.

Only one team emerged from the top 16 of the first revelation: West Virginia, which was replaced by Arkansas. This gives the SEC six teams in the top 16 – Texas A&M, South Carolina, No. 11 Georgia, No. 13 Tennessee, No. 14 Kentucky and No. 16 Arkansas – for the most from any conference.

Meanwhile, Pac-12 has four teams: Stanford, No. 7 Arizona, No. 10 UCLA and No. 15 Oregon.

The NCAA tournament will be held entirely in the San Antonio area, with some first-round matches in the vicinity of San Marcos and Austin. All games from Sweet 16 onwards will be at Alamodome, with the Women’s Final Four on April 2nd and 4th.

As it is a single venue event, there will be a true S curve for support, rather than the geography influencing where teams are placed.

In the national semifinals, the regional winner of Alamo will face the winner of the Hemisfair, and the winner of the Market will find the winner of the River Walk.

Alamo Region: 1. UConn, 2. Arizona, 3. Georgia, 4. Arkansas

Arizona is in this region, instead of the River Walk – which is where the Wildcats fall on the S curve – to prevent Pac-12 opponents Stanford and Arizona from having 1 or 2 in the same region. Instead, Baylor goes to the River Walk.

River Walk Region: 1. Stanford, 2. Baylor, 3. Louisville, 4. Tennessee

Baylor has moved up two positions since the last revelation, from No. 10 to No. 8.

Market region: 1. Texas A&M, 2. Maryland, 3. UCLA, 4. Kentucky

The Aggies went from 5th overall in the last revelation to 3rd overall.

Hemisfair Region: 1. South Carolina, 2. NC State, 3. Indiana, 4. Oregon

Wolfpack went from 6th place to 5th and, according to Bracketologist Charlie Creme, the state of NC is still in the mix for a general seed # 1.
