The big news from college basketball on Saturday was that Baylor suffered his first loss of the season in a place that has always been a house of horrors for the Bears. Kansas dropped Baylor on Phog 71-58, leaving the Bears for 1-18 lifetimes in that building.

The defeat takes Baylor to 3rd overall, behind Michigan, who defeated Indiana in a 73-57 fall in Bloomington on Saturday.

The new team in Sunday’s bracket is North Carolina. Tar Heels overcame a difficult first half to return and beat Florida State 78-70. This is North Carolina’s best win of the season and helped to erase the pain of losing to Marquette on Wednesday. Tar Heels took advantage of a free spot that opened when North Texas lost, making Western Kentucky the automatic C-USA qualifier in the key and releasing a spot.

It is not North Carolina’s place in the key that was saved, however; Tar Heels was going anyway. The team that had its place saved is the last team in: Drake. The Bulldogs lost at Bradley to end the regular season, losing the chance to tie for the MVC regular season title and get the No. 1 seed at Arch Madness. The Bulldogs were wiped out by injuries at the end of the season, and all they can do is hold on.

Duke could have gotten a seat too, but the Blue Devils fell home to Louisville in overtime. They would be among the last four with a win.

With the start of the conference tournaments, I will start using the best seed in the conference tournament as the automatic qualifier as soon as this is determined. Furman came out of the key and was replaced by UNC Greensboro at the Southern Conference. The Navy, which is undefeated in the Patriot League, replaced Colgate in the key today. Aspirants have to win on Sunday at the end of the regular season to stay in that position.

So, yes, I have NET’s number 10 team off the field. The rankings of the Patriot League teams this season are insignificant because only the Army and Navy played games without a conference, and they only played four each.
