Netflix announces Terminator anime series with Production IG studio

Netflix is ​​developing an original anime series based on Terminator, with the famous animation studio Production IG on board. The new animation series will “approach Terminator in a way that breaks conventions, subverts expectations and has real courage,” according to showrunner and executive producer Mattson Tomlin.

The project will be the Terminator franchise’s first foray into animation, after six live action films and a television series, Fox’s Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

“Terminator is one of the most iconic science fiction stories ever created – and it has only become more relevant to our world over time,” said John Derderian, vice president of Japan and anime at Neflix, in a press release. “The new animated series will explore this universe in a way never done before. We can’t wait for fans to experience this incredible new chapter in the epic battle between machines and humans. ”

Skydance and Netflix hired Production IG, the veteran anime production studio known for its work on shows like Ghost in the Shell, Haikyu !! and Psycho-Pass, to develop Terminator. Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, president and CEO of Production IG, said in a press release: “I asked my friend and longtime colleague Mamoru Oshii what he thought about the idea of ​​turning Terminator into an animated series. His answer was ‘Ishikawa, are you crazy?’ At that moment, I was confident that we should board. As big fans, our team at Production IG is putting their hearts and souls into creating this series. Tomlin’s credits include writing the stories for Matt Reeves’ next film Batman, From Netflix Project Powerand Capcom’s Mega Man movie. Now he has the task of becoming the Terminator franchise after the most recent major failure of the property, the coldly received Terminator: Dark Fate.

Netflix did not announce a launch window or title for its anime Terminator.
