Challenge and Defiance 2050 will end on April 29, Trion Worlds announced on Steam yesterday. Both games will be available for download and playable until that date.

The decision to end both games reached financial sustainability, with Trion World concluding that “both games could no longer be sustained”. Starting today, players will no longer be able to purchase in-game items or resources using real-world money. AND prices on all in-game items are being cut, so people can spend all of their remaining bits before the end of the world. Players who have spent any money on any of the games in the past few months will be able to transfer these bits to any Gamingo game.

The original Challenge was released on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in April 2013, just a few months before the launch of Xbox One and PS4. It was an MMO shooter and was related to a science fiction program on SyFy, also called Challenge. The connection was not meant to be a superficial marketing scam invented after the game and the program were launched. The developers and producers worked together. For example, the show’s writers and producers planned to make the characters ride horses, but that changed when the game developers rejected the idea, probably because it would be very demanding from a technical point of view. The show and game also planned to have character and plot crossovers.

Unfortunately, most of these plans never happened. The show was not a great success, and the game was released in a difficult state. In 2015, after three seasons, SyFy canceled the show, leaving the future of the game uncertain. But Trion Worlds continued to support you, until releasing a major update after the show was canceled, this was considered the fourth season of the show.

In 2018, Trion Worlds released a remastered and redesigned version of the game for PC, PS4 and Xbox One. Defiance 2050 would be free-to-play at launch, unlike the original Challenge, and would include new content set decades after the program’s plot. In April 2020, the original Challenge on the Xbox 360 was turned off.

Now, almost a year later, all other versions of this strange and ambitious MMO are finally coming to an end after eight years of service. For those who want to return to any game and relive some memories or experiences Challenge for the first time, Trion Worlds will allow new players to sign up and download the game until April 29.
