The surprisingly beautiful 2022 Kia CarnivalSedona’s name change was officially confirmed today; the news leaked last month. We also have some finishing details and, although Kia claims that Carnival is now a “Big Utility Vehicle”, it will not be for sale with the option of four-wheel drive.

Kia is making many changes to its fourth generation American minivan. The first three generations carried the Sedona model name, and now the model adopts the Korean sister model nameplate. The design is more like an SUV, hence the attempt to label it the Grand Utility Vehicle in previous teasers, before changing it and calling the Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) model in the latest news. It will also be the first model in the United States to be sold with the redesigned company logo.

A powertrain, a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine with 290 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque, will be available for each of the four trim levels on offer. It is combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission and will only be available with front-wheel drive when launched.

Average fuel efficiency is now slightly improved by a single point above the Sedona exit, reaching an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on the highway and 22 mpg on average. Kia also says its new MPV will tow up to 3,500 pounds.

Inside the sliding doors, there is an option to accommodate up to eight people, although the standard configuration accommodates seven. There is also an optional VIP Lounge seating package with extendable captain chairs in the second row, ventilated and connected to the entertainment system so you never have to sit down. Some kids are going to be spoiled, and we all just have to sit here and try to be happy for them.

The second row can be moved upwards so that an assembled car seat is within arm’s reach of the front passenger, or it can be removed entirely, and the third row folded completely on the floor, for a huge cargo area. There are also the familiar familiar tricks that the Honda Odyssey pioneered, including a rear row intercom system for the driver and internal rear-facing cameras that now even include night vision.

So far, only AutoGuide reported pricing information for the new van, which is not yet available on any Kia website in the U.S.:

When it reaches the North American coast in April 2021, it will have a starting price of $ 33,275 (incl. Dest.) For the basic LX finish and will go up to $ 47,275 for the fully loaded SX Prestige finish. EX and SX will bring the middle order and start with $ 38,775 and $ 42,275 respectively.

A Kia spokesman declined to confirm pricing details when emailed by Jalopnik. Official pricing information will be available to the US this week or next. The MPV itself should start selling in the summer.
