american idolThe second round of 19th season auditions no longer featured children of unfortunate political figures, but it did introduce us to a girl who looks like Katy Perry. And that is nothing.
The look-alike in question was 17-year-old Hannah Everhart, who charmed the judges with a lovely (though somewhat reserved) interpretation of Johnny Cash’s “Wayfaring Stranger”. She had an interesting tone of voice, but the judges needed to hear more.
They were a little more impressed by her work on Etta James’s “At Last”, but the amount of training and encouragement it required made me wonder how Everhart will do when the competition gets tougher.
Watch her test below and then read on for a list of 10 other memorable singers continuing on to Hollywood:
AMANDA MENA, 18 years old | This week’s first gold ticket went to Mena, an undeniable star who opened the episode with a killer version of the Beatles’ “Golden Slumbers”. In addition to winning that coveted sheet of paper, Mena was also nicknamed “unique” by a very impressed Perry.
AMMON OLAYAN, 17, and LIAHONA OLAYAN, 16 | This magical and musical brother and sister duo – the eldest of eight children! – discovered their compositional skills while living in tents and raising goats. And in front of three jaw-dropping jurors, they demonstrated their talents with one of the best original songs I’ve heard in Idol in a long time (maybe never?), a radio-ready jam that earned them unanimous sims across the board. The only hiccup, which I am now predicting will result in a dramatic cut during Hollywood Week, is that his older brother, Ammon, needs to work on his birth.
ANTHONY GUZMAN, 27 | No one, least of all the judges, would have guessed that this “modern Viking” was packing a set of tubes befitting an old school crooner – especially since it was presented by way of an exaggeration Avengers parody. “Don’t judge a book by its hammer,” pondered Perry before giving him one of his two yes. (Although Guzman helped Bryan return to his Scandinavian roots, it was his no.)
CALVIN UPSHAW, 26 | The judges were same feeling this audition, an exciting performance of Calvin Richardson’s “Falling Out”. It was a little difficult to say whether the judges were totally convinced of the song, or if they were just overwhelmed by its moving backstory, but they sent it in anyway.
CASEY BISHOP, 15 | This budding star was full of wonderful surprises, from his musical taste (Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sublime, etc.) to his powerful vocals. The judges liked the Motley Crue cover, but they They loved his next performance, a version of Ella Fitzgerald’s “My Funny Valentine” that was so good it literally made Perry laugh with delight.
YURISBEL, 25 | The judges have made some questionable decisions this season, but sending this “Cuban Cookie Monster” to Hollywood can overcome them all (so far). Sure, he had a lot of energy, but so did the bar mitzvah dancers. Where are from them golden tickets ?! Anyway, meeting this guy at Hollywood Week must be … interesting.
CHAYCE BECKHAM, 24 | Another avant-garde in the Top 10, this charmingly insecure heartthrob has the kind of hoarse voice that simply makes you pregnant. And “What Brings Life Also Kills” by Kolton Moore & The Clever Few was the perfect vehicle to show it off. Beckham better say goodbye to Apple Valley (there aren’t even any apples!) Because he has a long future in this competition.
CASSANDRA COLEMAN, 24 | What is there to say about this musical angel, who surprised the judges with a powerful performance of “The Way It Was” by The Killers? I kept trying to identify her sound, but Bryan put it best: “You are a new voice that the world has never heard”.
WILLIE SPENCE, 21 | Since the days of La’Porsha, we haven’t received a cover of “Diamonds” of this magnitude, but while she used the song to show her deepest record, Spence shone with its rising high notes – the perfect cover for what felt like an extremely long night. of hearings.
* Although this recap focuses only on competitors who arrived in Hollywood, can we talk for a minute about Ace Stiles, the boy with the “peculiar and vintage” voice who shared his story of becoming a transgender at age 14? I’m not saying that I disagree with the jury’s decision that Ace needs a little more confidence and life experience to develop as an artist, but the whole segment seemed a little … explorer is a very extreme word?
