An update from a Packers reporter will throw cold water on fans in Green Bay who hope to sign JJ Watt.
With JJ Watt officially out of Houston, many fans got excited and started rubbing their hands at the prospect of bringing the five-time Pro Bowler.
Unfortunately for Packers fans, they probably won’t be in the draw, according to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
As much fun as it is to see Watt end up in Green Bay, Silverstein’s argument is well accepted. The Packers are already dealing with tight pay cap numbers and their list of players to reheat is long.
Packers have a lot of work to do as a free agency to pursue JJ Watt
Free agents include pivot Corey Linsley, left guard Lane Taylor, tight end Marcedes Lewis, running backs Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams, wide receiver Tavon Austin, cornerback Kevin King, forwards Billy Winn, Montravius Adams and Damon Harrison, linebacker James Burgess and safety Will Redmond.
Some of them will be allowed to walk for other teams, but Green Bay will want to secure others.
Making Watt happen would require serious work in the background, structuring businesses perfectly to pay the asking price.
Packers will have to ask their own questions: Is it worth it?
The 2012 to 2015 Watt would be worth everything you could throw at it. The 2018 Watt would be a great addition. However, the Watt they will receive will soon turn 32 and comes with some serious baggage.
If Green Bay found it worthwhile, they would be right to move mountains to catch it. It is far from certain that they will reach that conclusion. Watt is a bet that someone will embrace. There are simply more likely players than the Packers.
