LastPass offers a free version of its password manager, but is limited to only one type of device at a time. If you want to change your password manager, Bitwarden offers a free and open source service with no limits. See how to transfer your LastPass passwords to Bitwarden.
Why switch from LastPass to Bitwarden
As of March 16, 2021, LastPass is changing the operation of its free plan. You will no longer be able to use desktop and mobile applications simultaneously. If you want to use LastPass on your smartphone and computer, you will need to pay for the company’s $ 3 / month plan.

Alternatively, you can switch to Bitwarden. Bitwarden is a secure and open source password manager that offers synchronization between devices and unlimited password entries for free.

The Bitwarden Premium plan costs just $ 10 / year and gives you access to its two-factor authentication feature (including support for hardware keys), emergency access and 1 GB encrypted storage. Bitwarden is available for every platform you can imagine. You can use your desktop application, browser extensions, mobile applications, web client and even command line tools.
Switching from LastPass to Bitwarden is really easy. All you need to do is generate a CSV file from your LastPass account that you can import directly into Bitwarden.
Observation: The CSV file that we generate in this guide will not be encrypted and will contain all your user names and passwords in plain text. Be sure to do this process on a reliable and secure computer and to completely delete the CSV file from the computer once the process is complete.
How to export LastPass passwords
We will begin the process by exporting all of your usernames and passwords to a LastPass CSV file.
This process can only be done using the LastPass browser extension. If you are not already using it, go ahead and install the LastPass extension.
Once the extension is installed and you sign in to your LastPass account, click it on the extensions toolbar. If you don’t see it on the extensions toolbar in Chrome, click the Extensions button (Jigsaw icon) and choose the LastPass extension.
Here, click on the “Account Options” button.
Then, go to the “Advanced” section.
You can now start the export process using the “Export” button.
Click on the “CSV LastPass File” option to download the unencrypted CSV file containing your usernames and passwords.
On the next page, enter your master password and click the “Continue” button.
LastPass will now download the CSV file to your computer’s local storage. You will find it in your default download location.
How to import passwords in Bitwarden
You can start the import process by logging into Bitwarden. First, open the Bitwarden website in your desktop’s web browser.
If you are new to Bitwarden, you can create a new account or log in using your existing account. From your Bitwarden vault, go to the “Tools” section at the top.
Here, choose the option “Import data” in the sidebar. Click on the drop-down menu below the first step and choose the option “LastPass (CSV)”.
Then click on the “Choose file” option in the second step.
In the file chooser, choose the CSV file you downloaded from LastPass and click the “Open” button.
Once added, click on the “Import data” button at the bottom of the page.
In a few seconds, the data will be imported. You will see the LastPass data displayed in your Bitwarden vault.
Now that your LastPass data is available on Bitwarden, you’ll find it on all your installed devices and browsers.
