Apple canceled its plans to add a feature similar to Samsung’s PowerShare to iPhone 13. The feature would have allowed users to charge wireless devices like AirPods via their phones’ internal battery.
According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple “has internally discussed the goal of allowing many of its mobile devices, such as Apple Watches, AirPods and iPhones to charge each other, but this functionality is unlikely in the near future. For iPhones 2019, Apple planned, but canceled, a feature that would allow users to carry AirPods on the back of the phone. “
This is not to say that Apple is not trying to find a solution for wireless charging anywhere. Gurman is being informed that Apple is working on a magnetically connected battery that would fit the iPhone 12 using MagSafe.
Unlike previous iPhone battery extenders, this would not be the case. It would simply be a battery, covered by a white rubber exterior, that would keep your phone and other accessories recharged wirelessly.
According to internal tests, the battery managed to stay in place. But development was halted due to an error that indicates that the packaging is overheating, when in fact it is not.
Of course, just because a product is supposed to be in development at Apple, it doesn’t indicate an actual launch. In 2017, Apple announced the AirPower mat, which would be able to charge multiple devices simultaneously. The carpet was eventually canceled due to overheating problems.
As for wireless charging and MagSafe, this seems to be the future that Apple is looking at. There have already been rumors about MagSafe appearing in 2021 MacBooks. And if an iPhone 13 without a door comes to fruition, as has also been rumored, MagSafe will be the only way to keep the phone charged.
