The Orange County Sheriff’s Department released a new video on Wednesday of a September shooting that left a man dead after two homeless liaison officers stopped him for allegedly walking down the street.
While police officers were trying to arrest the man, a deputy said he grabbed his gun, causing the other officer to fire two shots.
The new video includes dashcam footage, a cell phone video and a surveillance video of the shooting that killed Kurt Reinhold, a 42-year-old black man.

Dashcam footage of the incident shows two policemen, both from the Homeless Outreach Team, watching Reinhold from across the street and debating whether he is walking down the street.
“Look at this. He’s going to the street,” said a deputy shortly after 1 pm. The cops then argue if he’s really on the street, with one saying, “It’s controlled” and the other saying, “I don’t know, man … he just stopped in the middle.”
In the middle of the debate, a deputy begins to address the man and an official says: “Don’t create jurisprudence”.
The police then stop at Reinhold, who is standing on the sidewalk, and the three men leave the painting, but their audio can still be heard.
Reinhold seems confused about why they are stopping him, saying, “What for? … Where? Where? … I mean, why are you stopping me? … Stop touching me.”
The cops repeatedly tell him to stop: “Sit down … Because you’re walking down the street, go over there on the sidewalk … Are you going to stop or are we going to have to stop you?”

The video from a spectator’s cell phone shows Reinhold walking away from the police and slapping the cops’ hands as they try to stop him. Approximately two and a half minutes after the start of the interaction, deputies knocked Reinhold to the ground.
While the three men were fighting on the ground, the surveillance video from a nearby hotel shows Reinhold’s hand near or in an officer ‘s holster. The policeman says, “He has my gun.” Shortly thereafter, a deputy fires two shots at seven-second intervals.
After shooting Reinhold, MPs begin to perform CPR on him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Orange County District Attorney’s Office is leading the primary investigation into the shooting. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department homicide detachment is also investigating and an internal administrative investigation is also underway.
The September 23 shooting sparked protests amid national unrest over police violence.

Reinhold’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the sheriff’s office in December, according to the Orange County Register.
“The deputies who shot and killed Kurt did the exact opposite of what well-trained police officers are expected to do,” Neil Gehlawat, one of the lawyers representing Reinhold’s family, told the newspaper. “This process aims not only to expose the injustice surrounding Kurt’s death, but also the lack of adequate training for these deputies.”
