Program offers hope to SC residents struggling with housing costs

COLOMBIA, SC (WIS) – South Carolina residents financially affected by the COVID-19 pandemic can now apply for help through a new SC Housing program.

SC Stay has $ 25 million available to distribute to people struggling to pay their rent or mortgage due to the pandemic.

The registration period for the new program is now open. To be eligible, the following conditions must be met:

  • You must certify that you are eligible and that your income is at or below 80% of the county median family-adjusted income.
  • You must demonstrate that you are unable to pay all or part of your rent or mortgage, or are late in your rent or mortgage, due to circumstances arising from the coronavirus. Examples of this include, but are not limited to:
    • Wages lost due to layoff.
    • Reduced hours as a result of the employer leaving the business or reducing staff.
    • Inability to work due to COVID-19 infection and necessary quarantine or quarantine for a family member, etc.
  • You must have confirmation from the owner or creditor of your delay and be willing to accept payment on your behalf.

For those who are eligible, the program can cover up to six consecutive months of rent or mortgage payments – up to $ 7,500. Can be used for late rent until February 2020 and / or future rental payments.
