Big fire in the apartment complex at the northern end of Bexar County still smoldering

SANTO ANTÓNIO – A fire that destroyed an entire building at the northern end of Bexar County continues to burn.

The fire started around 1 pm Thursday at the Cortland View at TPC apartments, located on block 4000 of the TPC Parkway.

Early Friday morning, flames and smoke could still be seen rising from the ruins.

The people who live there told KSAT that they saw the fire explode on the second floor of the building moments after receiving an alert telling them to turn off the water heaters.

Firefighters evacuated about 50-60 people from that building and at least one other nearby.

“It’s been awful,” said Irene Loera. “I’m in building 7 next to building 6 that caught fire. They evacuated us before. We just stood here watching it burn. “

Loera said he also spent part of the night in his car, although a temporary shelter was opened for the homeless at Johnson High School.

A fire department supervisor told KSAT on Friday morning that a total of 130 apartments were damaged or destroyed.

There were also at least seven cars parked beside the building that were visibly burned.

Firefighters say the lack of water in the area has left the fire hydrants inside the dry apartment complex.

They had to bring water in trucks to fight the fire.

Part of the burning building eventually collapsed on Thursday night.

So far, there have been no reported injuries.

Investigators in the Bexar County Fire Department office will investigate the cause of the fire as soon as it is extinguished.
