Substitute pitcher John Schreiber, assigned to the mission six days ago when the Tigers signed with Nomar Mazara, was claimed exemption by the Boston Red Sox.
Schreiber, 26, grew up as a Tigers fan in the Downriver community in Rockwood and studied at Carlson High School in Gibraltar.
Chosen in the 15th round of the University of Northwestern Ohio in 2016, Schreiber had an excellent secondary league career and won a promotion to the major leagues in 2019. He posted an ERA of 6.28 out of 28 2/3 entries in the past two seasons, but hit 33 hitters and walked only eight.
To open a spot for Schreiber, the Red Sox put pitcher Chris Sale on the injured list for 60 days. Sale underwent Tommy John surgery last spring and will not be back on the hill until this summer.
Schreiber becomes the fifth Tiger to be claimed for resignation this winter, joining right-handed pitcher Anthony Castro (Toronto Blue Jays), outside defender Troy Stokes (Pittsburgh Pirates), striker Sergio Alcantara (Chicago Cubs) and striker Travis Demeritte (Atlanta Braves)
Castro and Stokes were later released again by their new teams, released and went directly to the minor leagues.
Alcantara was released by the Cubs on Thursday; if he releases the exemptions, the Cubs can keep him in their minor league system.
