The royal couple, who were engaged for nearly two years before making the official announcement, married at Westminster Abbey just five years before she became queen. But despite the magnitude of the ceremony, which was the first royal wedding to be broadcast on television, His Majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh share the knowledge that has never been made public.
The duke made a special inscription inside the queen’s wedding band that only the monarch and himself, as well as the engraver, know.
Royal expert Ingrid Seward discussed the mysterious print in her book ‘Prince Philip: Revealed’.
She wrote: “At least Philip did not pay for a wedding ring, as the people of Wales provided a Welsh gold nugget with which the alliance is made.
“She never takes it off and inside the ring is an inscription.
“No one knows what is written, except the recorder, the Queen and her husband.”
The royal couple has been married for 73 years, a milestone set last November at Windsor Castle during the confinement of the coronavirus.
On Tuesday, Prince Philip was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London after “feeling bad” and today the queen attended his first personal appointment of the year.
Fears for the duke’s health increased on Thursday night, when it was confirmed that he would spend the third night in the hospital.
