The USPS names 4 worst-performing Chicago post offices; report shows 62,000 mail items overdue by several months

CHICAGO (WLS) – There have been thousands of missed or delayed mailings and no clear response from the Chicago postal service.

On Thursday morning, a US congressman got involved.

Residents on the south and southwest sides have been complaining for months about problems with mail delivery.

A new report released on Thursday revealed inadequacies at the post office.

The USPS Inspector General’s report highlights the four worst performing locations in Chicago:

  • 83 with Ashland
  • 77 and Cottage Grove
  • 46th and Cottage Grove
  • 3600 blocks from West 79th Street.
  • Overdue correspondence, including letters and packages from these locations, totaled more than 62,000 from September to February.

Congressman Bobby Rush, who joined local councilors and mayors from Alsip and Evergreen Park at a morning press conference, found this unacceptable.

“People who depend on the postal service, the elderly, families, other people who depend on the postal service day after day – it is an absolute, epic, total and undeniable failure,” said Rush.

He is asking for the post office agent’s resignation and a management review.

The report he highlighted also revealed inaccurate reports of late mail.

Some of that information included “voter information” from the Secretary of State.

“We don’t deserve the kind of treatment we’re getting in Chicago,” said Pat Dowell, a councilor at 3rd Ward. “This is not just a problem on the south side; it is happening on the north side and in the suburban areas. It is time for a change.”

The report also focused on the digitization and mishandling of hundreds of packages and postman absenteeism rates, which in some cases reached 50%.
