The Red Sox announced this afternoon that it claimed the right John Schreiber out of the Tigers’ exemptions and left-handed placed Chris Sale on the 60-day injured list to open a vacancy in the 40-man squad. Sale’s move should not come as a shock, as he underwent Tommy John surgery on March 30 last year. It was reported last month that his rehabilitation should come close to the end of the typical 12-15 month recovery time. It will probably be an option for the Sox earlier this summer.
Schreiber, 27 next month, has thrown 28 2/3 innings with Detroit in the past two seasons, but has not done well, registering an ERA of 6.28 at that time. Other metrics are more optimistic in the previous choice of the 15th round, however, thanks in large part to an above average elimination rate of 25.6% and a very manageable 6.2% walking rate. The Schreiber sidearm-slinging has a career of 1.99 ERA over four minor league seasons, including a 2.28 mark in 59 1/3 innings in Triple-A.
Schreiber does not play very hard, as is common among sidearmers, but he has been a thorn in the side of the hitters throughout his tenure in the secondary league – the right-handed in particular. Right-handed opponents posted a laughable cut of .192 / .270 / .311 against him in 2019. In addition, Schreiber has several years of secondary league option left, giving the Red Sox depth and flexibility with its bullpen if they choose to keep it. it on the list of 40 men.
