Erling Braut Haaland put yet another penalty on his young cap yesterday against Sevilla, after scoring his 18th goal in just 13 games in the Champions League. Despite moving to Borussia Dortmund just twelve months ago, all the major European clubs have him on their radars and will try to win the race for his signature as soon as possible. The 20-year-old has a € 75 million termination clause that will take effect in 2022, but clubs like Chelsea are apparently willing to pay dearly to sign him before that.
Of course, the BVB must fight for the crown jewel, but according to reports from the BBC and the German channel WAZ (via Sport Witness), the financial crisis on the Bundesliga side may compel them to sell.
According to reports, Dortmund has already lost € 26 million in revenue for the day and could lose up to € 75 million if it loses the qualification for the Champions League – it is currently only 6th in the league. To compensate for these losses, the BVB has compiled an eight-man “emergency sales list” that includes Jadon Sancho, Axel Witsel, Manuel Akanji, Mahmoud Dahoud, Giovanni Reyna, Jude Bellingham, Raphael Guerreiro and Erling Haaland, however, the matches the last four would be the last resort – although losing Europe would not help in any way.
Sancho, often linked to Chelsea, is the most likely to leave, with BVB even reducing the asking price to € 100 million. However, if the financial situation deteriorates further, there will be more sales, and Haaland would certainly reach another € 100 million or more.
Of course, that doesn’t make Chelsea the favorite for his signing at all, but with the club in a healthy financial position, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Blues make a concerted effort to sign the generational talent.
