An officer who stopped to help, who he thought was a driver arrested near Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on Sunday morning, quickly discovered that the vehicle’s passenger was in labor, the Chicago Police Department said in an announcement.

The officer immediately called the Chicago Fire Department for help.

But the woman couldn’t wait for an ambulance because the baby was already being born, police said.

“The policeman was in the right place at the right time and was able to deliver a healthy baby boy,” said the police.

The mother and baby were transported to a nearby hospital and both are “doing very well,” the statement added.

“Although we like to highlight this 25-year-old veteran officer and his remarkable work, he prefers the spotlight to focus on the mother and son,” the police said. “Congratulations to the new mom and happy birthday to the newborn baby boy.”

Police spokesman Michael Carroll told the Chicago Sun-Times that the officer is about two weeks away from retirement.
