WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Weather alert until Monday. Today, a winter storm will continue to produce light to moderate snow and dangerous chills of the wind. Tonight and Monday the snow will move out of the area, however, the intense cold wind will continue. The reported amounts of snow in south-central Kansas until 8 am range from 1.7 ″ at Eisenhower Airport (Wichita) to 4.5 ″ at Oxford (Cowley Co.). Elsewhere in Kansas, reports between 1 and 4 ″ are common.
More snow is expected to leave Oklahoma for Kansas throughout the day, increasing these totals. Once the storm passes and moves eastward in Missouri, total snow accumulation is expected to range from 1-3 ″ in northern Kansas, 3-5 ″ for the rest of the state, except in the far south and southeast of Kansas ( Wellington to Chanute) where 5 -8 ″ is possible. The chills of the wind will also be a factor with winds from the north with gusts of 25 mph. The chills range from 15 to 25 degrees below zero and only get worse this evening and Monday. The lowest values of thermal sensation are expected in the morning hours of Monday and Tuesday and can drop to -25 to -35 across the state. Warnings and warnings of thermal sensation were published throughout the state until Tuesday morning. Freezing can occur within 20-30 minutes at these temperatures. Record low temperatures are possible on Monday and Tuesday mornings, as temperatures drop well below zero across the state.
Some sunshine is expected on Monday, with the storm system moving east. It remains very cold until Wednesday with high temperatures in the single digits and teenagers.
