Cassidy’s decision came as a surprise to some after he was seen on Friday with a demonstration who showed support for Trump’s acquittal, but his communications director said Cassidy had drafted two statements, one for and against Trump’s sentencing.

Cassidy said earlier that house managers “got along very well” with their arguments for Trump’s guilt.

However, the arguments were insufficient, as the conviction would require 17 Republicans to side with Democrats.

As Trump was not convicted, he could run for political office again. He made it clear that he will remain involved in the political sphere, but it is not clear what his future plans are with the Republican Party.
