It was the Friday before Valentine’s Day
And all over the house
No creature was moving
Because we cannot leave.
* Sigh * It’s Valentine’s Day again. I’m totally romantic and I have Valentine’s Day traditions dating back five years, which I can’t do because my favorite restaurant is closed – for security reasons – and I refuse to set foot in a cinema again.
This can be a good thing, considering that Valentine’s Day falls directly in the middle of Black History Month and celebrating Black love is extremely important. Because we were stuck for a long time, we did not have as much chance to love our divine darkness and the divine darkness of others. The end of 2020 brought us Sylvie’s love, sporting a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and great reviews from critics everywhere. Last Valentine’s Day, Stella Meghie’s The photo, a love story centered on the family and connecting with their own roots, debuted. The fact that these films were released less than a year apart surprises me, but that is not the point.
This year, I want to pay tribute to films that I love and that paved the way for black love to be appreciated on the cinema screen – and maybe even launch a children’s film. Types of love in everyone – from romantic love to friendship and family love – are featured in these films and are a perfect addition to your next Sunday night.
